Year 4 Artwork inspired by Henri Matisse

Lesson: Art and design

Class: Year 3 Year: 2018 - 2019

At the end of the Summer term, Year 3 met their new Year 4 teacher, Mrs Hayes.

We worked together to create our own version of' 'Océanie, la mer' (Oceania, the Sea) which was originally created by Henri Matisse in 1946 when he was 78 years old. Due to ill health, he changed his artistic style to paper cut-outs (les gouaches découpées).

You will see from the picture that he displayed his artwork in his Parisian apartment; the original piece being beige and white.

Inspired by his use of bold, bright colours in his other works from this period, such as 'the Mermaid and the Parakeet' (1952), we decided to use similar colours for our version of 'Océanie, la mer.'
