Year 4 Study Text for English

We are off to a flying start with our English work this term. For fiction, we are going to be writing an imaginative story on the theme of dragons. Our study text is a contemporary tale, ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward. It tells the story of a boy, George, who feels ignored, unseen and overlooked by the people in his life. Fascinated by small dragons who also go unnoticed in society, he befriends many of them but makes the fatal mistake of feeding them and inviting them into his home. Trouble then begins as the tiny creatures start to wreak havoc in George’s life with him getting the blame. After referring to the Encyclopaedia of Dragons, he realises that he must take them back to the place from whence they came in order to keep them safe; hence his ambitious plan to build the ‘Dragon Machine.
