The countdown to Christmas has arrived but Year 5 are remaining as focussed and hard working as ever!

In English they have been writing a descriptive piece to personify the wind using all the techniques they have learnt from our book, The Promise. They have completely surpassed all my expectations and included relative embedded clauses, metaphors, figurative language, repetition and short sentences all to great effect.  Elijah and Isabel have been chosen as work of the week but special mentions must go to Ryan, Lewis, Reuban and Zuzanna for amazing description that painted an image in the audiences head.

Science has been very exciting with us planning and carrying out an investigation to test the friction and grip across our secret agent, Jamie Bond’s, shoes.  It was great to see the children being cross curricular with their maths and reading off the scales on the Newton meters and also creating graphs to display the results.  Speaking of maths, we also seem to have cracked those pesky protractors and used them accurately to measure angles as well as our knowledge of degrees on a line and around a point to work out missing angles too. Well done everyone as this was not easy.  Mathletics will help you work on this concept this week too.

In readiness for our DT making week on the 11th December, we have begun to research Moving Toys and how cams and followers work to create motion and movement.  This will support us during that week when we will be designing and making our own toy in pairs.

For next week, we need the children to bring in junk materials to make boats from for our water resistance experiment.  Think about fizzy drinks bottles, plastic milk cartons, laundry liquid containers, fruit punnets etc.

Thank you for everyone’s support with the “bring a bottle” donations for the Christmas fayre.  Also, thank you for your participation in the Smarties for School scheme.  Our class have decided to buy some new board games to use at wet play and also some educational, logic style ones to support them with their maths problem solving.
